Overview
At Sollus Northwest, our mission is to improve health access and health status for rural, minority, and underserved persons living in the region by developing training programs for health professionals in our clinics where we serve those populations.
As the first medical residency program in the Lower Yakima Valley, Sollus Northwest Family Medicine Residency began in 2013 and has since received ACGME accreditation and Osteopathic recognition. The program is affiliated with and is sponsored by, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, one of the largest community-based health center organizations in the Pacific Northwest. The interdisciplinary staff is dedicated to the patient-centered, integrated healthcare, and evidence-based model of care. The program also has medical school affiliations with Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Washington, and the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. In addition to working in our Grandview Medical-Dental Clinic, residents gain clinical experience at Trios Health in Kennewick, WA; Prosser Memorial Health in Prosser, WA; Astria Sunnyside Hospital in Sunnyside, WA, and Virginia Mason Memorial in Yakima, WA.
Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic provides a broad range of general and specialized medical, dental, psychiatric, nursing, women’s health, social work, and ancillary services for the primary care patient in a community-based clinic. Grandview Medical-Dental Clinic opened in 1992 and was expanded in 2012. The Grandview clinic sits among rolling green fields in the Yakima Valley, halfway between the city of Yakima and the Tri-Cities. Grandview is a friendly community with many residents who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic provides an interdisciplinary team model directed toward health promotion, disease prevention, management of acute and chronic medical conditions, referral to specialty care, and coordination of patient health care needs. Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic received a level 3 PCMH recognition from NCQA in 2014.
“Sollus” is Latin for the adjective “full” or “whole.” It is an appropriate name for our medical residency program. “Sollus” dovetails well with the four tenets of osteopathic philosophy. In addition, it complements the mission and values of the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic in its transformation of health care delivery into a true patient-centered medical home model.
Patients
The patient population varies by program site but can be broadly defined as low-income and underserved patients of all ages. Our patients are primarily Hispanic, Spanish-speaking migrant/seasonal farmworkers, and their family members. However, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinics serve patients from a wide variety of races, ethnicities, and cultures. The patients served at our clinics often cannot access medical care anywhere else. The majority of our patients are on Medicaid or have no medical insurance, many of whom are living below the federal poverty level.
